AFTERSUN is an original linocut print created on quality rice paper. Size is 8.5" x 11". Signed by the artist.

"This print is dedicated to one of my favorite films, Aftersun (2022), written and directed by Charlotte Wells. In the film, Sophie looks back on a childhood trip with her father. At the time, it seemed warm with swimming, dancing, and hotels. As an adult, she begins to understand the sadness and depression that lived underneath it in her father’s mind.

I focus only on Calum, removing the warmth of the holiday to sit with what is happening beneath the surface.

The waves are meant to feel beautiful and consuming at the same time, representing the pressure inside his mind. I wanted the water to feel like his internal dialogue made visible, the thoughts that keep returning and the grief that keeps pulling him in.

Aftersun is the distance between loving someone and being able to reach them. Calum is there with his daughter, but part of him is somewhere else. For anyone who has loved someone with depression, that distance is familiar." - Ke Martins, Artist

Each piece begins with a hand-drawn sketch, which I transfer to a linoleum block and carve by hand using fine gouges. I roll oil-based ink onto the block with a rubber brayer and print it by hand using both a glass baren and a small tabletop etching press. Each print is individually inked and hand-pulled.
