Sapphic Sidequests: Collaging with Sappho

Sapphic Sidequests is headed to Floriography Studio NYC for an afternoon of Collaging with Sappho!

This sapphic workshop combines the writing of Sappho with the techniques of blackout poetry and collage. We’ll use Sappho’s words as a starting point for creating new poems and visual compositions, cutting, rearranging, and layering text and imagery to explore love, desire, intimacy, and queer connection. You'll leave with your own collage-based work inspired by Sappho’s poetry.

This workshop is 2 hours and will be facilitated by Julien Thomas, co-founder of the studio and a previous educator working with LGBTQ+ communities.

Light snacks and drinks provided. Please keep in mind that this workshop is limited to 12 participants, so get your tickets early! No previous art or collage experience needed. All are welcome!

Who is Sappho?

Sappho was born around 610 BCE on the Greek island of Lesbos and remains an enduring symbol of queer identity and creativity. Her lyric poetry captures themes of love, desire, and the beauty of feminine intimacy. Sappho's works, though mostly surviving in fragments, are celebrated for their profound emotional depth and innovative use of the "sapphic stanza."
