ESTOICO Print

"Estoico comes from the Portuguese word for stoic meaning strong, steady, and even-tempered in the face of hardship. It does not mean being emotionless, but rather feeling deeply and still finding a way to keep going.

This portrait is a nod to my Portuguese culture and the perseverance I associate with fado, immigration, loss, and family legacy. The man in this block print represents the many men depicted in my family portraits across different decades: composed, distant, and looking somewhere beyond the frame.

His gaze creates a sense of separation between him and the viewer, as if he is fixed between what was and what could be. He is looking toward something unseen: a dream? A future? Through this image, Estoico reflects the act of carrying longing, grief, and hope all at the same time." - Ke Martins, Artist

PROCESS 
Each piece begins with a hand-drawn sketch, which I transfer to a linoleum block and carve by hand using fine gouges. I roll oil-based ink onto the block with a rubber brayer and print it by hand using both a glass baren and a small tabletop etching press. Each print is individually inked and hand-pulled.
